Turning 65? First Steps to Medicare
Christine Thompson, Medicare Counselor
Turning 65 is a big milestone! Now it’s time to sign on to Medicare. But where to begin? Start with Social Security.
Why?
Medicare provides your coverage, but you’ll sign up through Social Security (or the Railroad Retirement Board) because they need to see if you're eligible for Medicare, including whether you (or another qualifying person) paid Medicare taxes long enough to get Part A without having to pay a monthly premium. They also process requests to sign up for Medicare Part B if you wish.
It’s this step that will get you a Medicare card.
How?
There are 3 ways to reach Social Security:
- In person. Stop by the Social Security office nearest you. Here are a few locations:
West Frankfort 1005 Factory Outlet Dr. 1-888-223-8869 Carbondale 250 W. Cherry St, Rm. 104 1-877-714-0377 Harrisburg 18 Veterans Dr. 1-866-366-3980 - Call the national Social Security office at +1 800-772- 1213. Tell the representative you want to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B, or Part A only. (Call TTY +1 800- 325-0778 if you're deaf or hard of hearing.)
- You can also sign up online at www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up. There you will create a username and password.
When?
For most people, your Initial Enrollment Period lasts for 7 months, starting 3 months before you turn 65, and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65. (If you’re under age 65, you may be eligible for Medicare if you have permanent kidney failure or if you receive Disability benefits.)
How do I know to sign up for Part B or not?
That depends on if you have credible insurance elsewhere. If you’re still working and have health insurance, or if your spouse can carry you on their insurance, you may defer your Part B without a penalty.
Is that it?
Not necessarily. Once you get your card, now it’s time to visit with a Medicare counselor, so we can determine what other Medicare benefits you may need, such as a drug plan, supplements or other eligible assistance.
