Women's Equality Day at SIH
Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on August 26th, commemorates the ratification of the 19th Amendment and federal protections for women’s right to vote. Advancing gender equality allows diverse perspectives and inclusive practices to create an equitable work environment while improving patient care.
SIH is committed to providing an equitable work environment to all employees, no matter their gender identity. Read more about the career paths and insight of six women who exemplify SIH’s mission and values.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that significantly impacted your growth and development?
“When I went through a system restructuring, I found myself in a position where I had to walk away from what I was comfortable doing to begin a new leadership role in an area I wasn’t familiar with. Little did I know that opportunity would be a pivotal moment in my career. It helped boost my experience and skill set while allowing me to showcase my leadership abilities on a different level. I learned that growth is often uncomfortable and full of feelings you weren’t expecting, but often necessary for your next steps.”
-SIH Urology and Podiatry Surgical Services Practice Manager Jasmine Porter
What challenges have you faced as a woman in your field, and how have you overcome them?
“The biggest challenge I have faced as a woman in my male dominated field was just getting people to listen to what I had to say. The key is to always be prepared. Since a lot of what I do relates to data, I have found that being able to explain a complex process and complicated data in a way that anyone can understand it is key to making an impact. I have been fortunate to have some excellent mentors and leadership opportunities and training.”
-SIH Director of Material Management Denise Miller
What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter the healthcare industry or pursue leadership roles?
“Pursue continuous learning opportunities. Healthcare is a dynamic field, so staying current with advancements through ongoing education and certifications is crucial. Seek opportunities for professional development and specialize in areas that align with your interests and career goals. Invest in yourself.”
-SIH Administrative Director of Post Acute Care Maria Cull, DPT, MBA, FACHE, MRMC
How has working at SIH supported your career progression and professional development?
“My nursing career began 17 years ago. I received a scholarship from SIH that paid for my degree while I worked on the surgical unit at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Over the next 10 years, I worked my way from a novice nurse to become the interim manager of the unit before deciding to transfer to the Nursing Professional Development in pursuit of my passion for nursing education.
I raised my daughters while maintaining a good work-life balance; I worked full-time while earning my BSN and MSN degrees. SIH has supported my educational endeavors and provided the opportunity to attend conferences, trainings, and workshops. Last year, I graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Practice in Ethical Leadership at 53 years old.
Anything is possible if you believe in yourself and surround yourself with a strong support system. SIH has been instrumental in shaping my nursing journey and offering me the opportunity to serve my community with excellent nursing care.”
-SIH Nursing Retention Strategist and Nursing Professional Outcomes Leader Gina Ashbrook, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, MEDSURG-BC
What initiatives or programs at SIH have been particularly beneficial in promoting gender equality and supporting women's career advancement?
“SIH offers many initiatives and programs to promote equality and support. The Coaching and Manage Well program, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion work being done across SIH and the many Foundations of Leadership classes are all very beneficial in supporting women’s career advancement. I was given the opportunity to step into a leadership role and continuously receive support any time I have questions. I have access to trainings on a vast range of topics to encourage both my personal and professional growth.”
-SIH Harrisburg Medical Center Environmental Services Supervisor Emily “Laine” Leberman
Looking forward, what are your aspirations for the future, both for your own career and for advancing women's equality in the workplace?
“I will continue to provide support and an open door to anyone who needs advice or help. When I took my current position, I had to re-evaluate and learn to lead the team instead of managing the team. Having an administrator believe in me and help me develop my managerial skills shaped my professional development, and I want to provide that same support to those I lead.”
