SIH a Supporting Sponsor of Coldest Night of the Year Fundraiser Feb. 22
On February 22, community members across Southern Illinois will bundle up and take to the streets in support of the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a national walk dedicated to raising awareness and funds for those experiencing homelessness, hunger and hardship. Locally, the event benefits the Carbondale Warming Center, which provides emergency shelter and essential resources to those in need.
SIH is proud to support this initiative, continuing our longstanding partnership with the Warming Center to care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Through the SIH Community Health Needs Assessment, we see firsthand the challenges many face in securing basic necessities like housing and healthcare. The demand is significant—the Warming Center requires approximately $36,000 per month to operate, a figure that rises when the second floor is opened during frigid temperatures to accommodate more individuals in need.
Since 2020, SIH has provided nearly $90,000 in financial support to help sustain the center’s mission.
“The Coldest Night of the Year is an incredible opportunity to come together as a community and support our neighbors in need,” said SIH System Director of Community Health and Community Benefits Angie Bailey. “The funds raised help ensure the Warming Center can continue providing a safe, warm place for those who have nowhere else to go.”
Participants can register as individuals or as part of a team and choose between a 2K or 5K walk through downtown Carbondale. The event serves as a reminder of the cold conditions many people face daily—and the collective effort required to bring warmth, shelter and support to those experiencing homelessness.
“This event is more than just a walk—it’s a statement of solidarity and compassion,” said Dina Hyde, Warming Center board member and CNOY event director. “By walking, fundraising or simply spreading the word, you are making a direct impact on the lives of those who rely on the Warming Center.”
Whether you lace up your walking shoes, donate or volunteer, every action makes a difference. Join us on February 22 to show your support for this vital community resource.
