Student Nurse Extern Program
Program Overview
SIH offers a 3-tiered student nurse extern (SNE) program that provides paid learning opportunities for nursing students as they progress through nursing school. This part-time program is open to all nursing students. See below for information:
SNE 1
- Open to any students in a nursing program
- SNE 1s are allowed to provide many components of direct patient care independently within their hospital unit of hire
SNE 2
- Open to ADN and BSN nursing students within the final year of their program
- SNE 2s can work in any departments within the SIH hospitals
- SNE 2s are paired with an experienced nurse preceptor and will be allowed to perform a variety of skills under the preceptor's supervision
- SNE 2s will continue in this learning position until they seamlessly transition into the new graduate RN resident role once their program is complete and they pass their state licensing exam
SNE 3
- Open to ADN and BSN nursing students within the final year of their program
- Requires an active LPN license
- SNE 3s will only be hired into medical, surgical, rehab, progressive care or behavioral health units within the SIH hospitals
- SNE 3s are paired with an experienced nurse preceptor and will be allowed to perform a variety of skills under the preceptor's supervision
- SNE 3s will continue in this learning position until they seamlessly transition into the new graduate RN resident role once their program is complete and they pass their state licensing exam
This partnership will provide a variety of experiences to help the extern grow their nursing knowledge and skills. These positions offer flexible scheduling. Hourly pay increases with each SNE tier.
