SIH Breast Center
Every day in Illinois, 25 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.
But here’s the good news: If it’s detected early, breast cancer can be treated. At SIH Breast Center, our specialists encourage regular mammograms and other screenings to help promote early detection.
However, if breast cancer is found, we’re here to coordinate your care and provide emotional support along the way. You won’t face your diagnosis alone.
SIH Breast Center is our region’s leader in prevention and treatment of breast cancer. In fact, we were the first facility in Southern Illinois to bring patients 3D mammography.
Our team meets weekly at the SIH Cancer Institute to review prospective treatment planning for every newly diagnosed cancer patient. The team includes: the surgeon, radiologist, medical oncologist, pathologist, radiation oncologist and nurse navigator. Together, our team plans the best course of treatment for each patient.
Services at SIH Breast Center
Our skilled and compassionate team uses the latest technology in our patient-friendly facility. Here’s a look at some of the services we offer:
Early detection is key to successfully treating . During a risk assessment, we’ll talk to you about some of the steps you can take to prevent breast cancer (like quitting smoking or limiting your alcohol intake), along with showing you options for enhanced screenings, if you have a family history of breast cancer or if you’re at high-risk of developing breast cancer.
3D Mammography and Breast Ultrasound
A traditional mammogram takes two images of each breast. However, a 3D mammogram produces several X-ray images of the breasts from multiple angles. These images give radiologists a better view of the breast, increasing their ability to detect breast cancer in younger women, in women with dense breasts and in pre- or peri-menopausal women.
Minimally Invasive Biopsy Technique
If needed, minimally invasive biopsy techniques are available for same-day visits. If a suspicious area is found, an onsite biopsy allows us to immediately sample the area and make a diagnosis. This procedure reduces the time you spend waiting for answers.
A breast MRI is geared for women who’ve tested positive for breast cancer or for women who are at high risk for breast cancer. A breast MRI takes numerous images of your breast, producing detailed pictures. If a breast MRI is necessary, MRI imaging technology is available at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
